A big thank you!!!! To all of you who contributed so much to the support of the upcoming radio show, I am blown away at the response. I guess, as my mom would say, moving forward with the radio show is "a glowing ticket." Our natural mission in life is always showing us where we are meant to show up—it feels like a glowing ticket that shines brightly calling you towards it. We just have to not only look for them but "feel" them. That is the difference.
School has now started. Many of you have contacted me regarding assistance with your child. Same Yet Different
I want to share an awareness that really has me in awe. I know you have heard me say how grateful I am to be living just four blocks from the ocean and beach. Not just any beach but Carmel beach—most known for its pristine fine white sands and aquamarine like waters. Though I lived close to the beach when I was in college, I never had an opportunity like I do now to walk and visit the ocean every day. It has become a part of my morning exercise routine and, at times in the late afternoon, I will go and sit on the sand and actually get into the ocean. Yes, believe it or not—the water is very cold here in Northern California but, on some days, I actually get in to feel the salt on my skin. I have even discovered a beautiful cove, that I visit quite frequently, where lots of pelicans and seagulls hang out.
An aspect that has greatly surprised me on these daily visits to the sea, is how every day the ocean itself is incredibly different. And, I mean really different. Not just the mere “tide is in” or “tide is out” type of different. I mean everything about the landscape, the terrain, the smells, the waves, and the full ocean itself is extremely different from one day to the next in the exact same location. This is incredible to watch.
Some days the sand is smooth and a gorgeous pearl white color free of sea kelp. Other days the sand is loaded with deep green kelp forest leaves and sand mounds of various sizes that make it difficult to walk. Some days the ocean is quiet and flat with minimal waves or movement of any kind. Other days the ocean is noisy and loud with large crashing waves with white caps as if the ocean is foaming at the mouth. I have experienced days when the ocean smells very strong and the kelp forest is jetting out of the ocean top eager to show itself to everyone. I have seen days when there is no kelp in sight and driftwood has dotted the shore landscape.
I have seen swimming seals, playful otters, and dolphins dancing. I have seen dead seals and dolphins washed up on shore. I have seen upset stranded seals waiting for local animal rescue to arrive. I have seen strong, scary, run for your life, type of currents that make you cautious not to get too near the water. Other days, in the exact same location where it was scary, the water is very calm where a baby could wade in the water on its own. I have experienced large amounts of knats, flies, and ravens eating left over sea kelp bundles that have been baked by the sun. Other days the seagulls and pelicans are playing in the surf of the ocean with no flies anywhere in sight. Take all of these scenarios and shake them around like dice in your hands and voila’ – you never know what combination you will encounter on which day. It is astounding.
This wide variety of change in the ocean and its surrounding beach is just like you and I. Every day we are the same. Today I am Jennifer and tomorrow I am Jennifer. Yet a different aspect of me may surface, or shift or change or expose itself depending on the day, the situation, or my current emotions on a particular day from one moment to the next. Yet no one will dispute that I am indeed Jennifer, the same person as yesterday. The ocean is the ocean no matter what form it takes on such a day. No one will dispute the ocean is the ocean both today AND tomorrow. It is a reminder that we all have different facets to our personality and our persona. Every day brings out a different aspect of ourselves or a haphazard combination of aspects of who we are.
So on the days when the ocean smells and the tide is low and the kelp is thick, I tell myself that this is just today. I acknowledge that this is still the ocean and this is just how it appears today and that it will change again. We can have this same awareness with each other and especially with ourselves. No matter how much we love each other different aspects of another person on certain days we may not like. Instead of finding them at fault or upset with them for not being how you expected them to be on that day, we can take a step back and realize that they are still them. That on another day or time a different aspect will appear. This allows us to be gentle with others and have compassion.
When it comes to ourselves, we can do the same. How many of you judge yourself for not being as productive as you “think” you should be on certain days? Or you don’t feel much like talking to others and want to hide away. During these times I invite you to remember the ocean. Even if the ocean is quite and calm one day it will have more movement and action on another day. One day is not better than another. They are all beautiful and they are all different facets of the same. A beautiful reminder to honor all facets of who you are – just as the ocean knows in its pure essence that all it has to be is the ocean – no matter what facet shines through on a certain day, all you have to be is you. Same every day yet different.
