Beauty of the Unknown
Taking the leap of faith to move here has brought about a series of varied life lessons. Learning to let go of the familiar and to be open to what crosses my path have been the biggest two. This includes accepting the extreme difference in climates here. After living here for six months and stepping deeper into letting go still did not prepare me for the grandeur of what I recently witnessed. A story of honoring the beauty of the unknown. The day started as a beautifully clear day with bright blue skies. It was warmer than it had been for a week. I was thrilled to be walking the ocean boardwalk wearing a skirt, t-shirt, and flip flops. I walked the full length of a local beach boardwalk gazing at the glorious coastline of roaring crashing waves, sea lions, and surfers dotting the coast. I was very relaxed and after my hike decided to jump in my car and run a few errands. I had my sun roof down and I was driving south on Highway 1 towards Carmel from Monterey. Coming up to a huge curve in the highway, I rounded a well known bend in the road. The bend is canopied with a large grove of trees that I've always admired. As I came out of the curve, something in the sky, in the far distance, captured my full attention. A white smoke like cloud was literally pouring into the street at an extreme speed. I immediately wanted to put on the breaks for fear of running into it--though I knew it was miles away. What would I be running into I thought? It is just a cloud, right? It would only absorb me. This fast approaching haze was horizontally making its way into the intersection ahead of me. What was this? Was it a fire? I had never seen anything like this before. The puff was thick and moving with a vast swiftness yet it was pure white in color. It consumed the entire sky. It was FOG.
This haze I came to realize was the true fog that I kept hearing all about since my arrival to the Monterey Carmel Bay. Since I had arrived, I had experienced cloudy days, cool days, and some low cloudy days. I thought that was the extent of the well known haze I had heard about that covers San Francisco as well as the areas of Monterey and Carmel. I had learned many poets and writers from Carmel had written about the fog of this area. Well, now I get it. I had no idea the grace and grandness and complete aliveness of the fog that permeates this area. I put my arm outside the car and could feel the cool air hit the palm of my hand. It poured down through the sunroof and hit my face. This was real. This was the most aliveness I had known in a long time. This is like nothing anyone can prepare you for. The extreme animation of the fog gave it a breathing like quality. Thus the very aliveness I was experiencing. Upon reflection of this event, I now recognize that the fog is a true metaphor for so many of us. How our fear of the unknown causes us to slam on the breaks. How even though we rationally know that whatever change we wish to step into, just like the fog, is nontangible and truly will not hurt us. The fear of being enveloped and swept up into it a place of not being able to see where we will come out on the other side is daunting. This personal encounter with a nonthreatening white cloud was the greatest opportunity for me to learn letting go. Even if things feel like they are moving so fast. I learned to allow myself to be swept up in the beauty and grace of the grand unknown. To feel it and allow it to penetrate my very being and instead of reaching for the breaks to softly press on the gas. To push the gas peddle to just flow into the haze and smile in the process. The smile--knowing you are choosing aliveness. I share this story to encourage all of you to choose the unknown and feel your life. Aliveness will naturally prevail when you do. Even if you have never encountered the presence of such a cloud know that this cloud represents the fog of life. Mysterious, scary, unknown, fast, grand, graceful, white, pure, pervasive, and EXHILARATING! |
